Keep two storylines clear in a short video

Parallel storylines need distinct visual identities and an understandable reason to alternate. If the viewer spends the whole film identifying who is where, simplify to one thread.

Planning sequence: Situation, then Change, then Consequence, then Ending.

A practical method

  1. Assign each thread a different location or recurring object.
  2. Cut between them at matching story moments.
  3. Bring them together through a shared event or explicit comparison.

An example brief to adapt

Written illustration of this method; not a report of a rendered film or a customer result.

Outline a 90-second fictional story alternating between a baker preparing bread and a ferry worker preparing a crossing. Use separate settings and one narrator. End when the bread reaches the ferry. Keep the timeline simple and explain why the two routines belong together.

Review before moving on

  • Can each thread be recognized without labels?
  • Is their timing clear?
  • Does the connection justify the alternation?

Record a concrete observation beside each check: a line in the treatment, a source passage or a timestamp in the downloaded film. If you cannot inspect an item yet, leave it open. A request in a brief is an intention; the result is what must be reviewed.

What to avoid

Avoid adding a third storyline only to increase scale. A short running time leaves little room to recover from identity or timeline confusion.
