Keep important props consistent

A prop continuity plan records the object's appearance, location and state at each story beat. It matters most when the audience must recognize the same item or notice that it has changed.

Planning sequence: Subject, then Framing, then Movement, then Review.

A practical method

  1. Give the prop a simple visual identifier.
  2. Track who holds it and whether it is open, full, broken or repaired.
  3. Check every cut where its state matters.

An example brief to adapt

Written illustration of this method; not a report of a rendered film or a customer result.

Use one plain red notebook in a fictional messenger story. It begins closed on a desk, is carried under the messenger's arm and ends open on a bench. Do not show readable text inside it. List the notebook's expected state beside each scene.

Review before moving on

  • Does the object change color or size?
  • Does it move without an action?
  • Is the important change visible?

Record a concrete observation beside each check: a line in the treatment, a source passage or a timestamp in the downloaded film. If you cannot inspect an item yet, leave it open. A request in a brief is an intention; the result is what must be reviewed.

What to avoid

Minor background variation may be harmless, but a plot-bearing prop changing identity can break the story. Prioritize continuity checks according to narrative importance.
