Use a silent pass to test visual clarity

Watching without audio reveals whether the sequence communicates its basic actions and whether important context depends entirely on narration. It is a diagnostic pass, not a requirement that every narrated film tell its complete argument silently.

Planning sequence: Evidence, then Picture, then Sound, then Sign-off.

A practical method

  1. Watch once without consulting the script.
  2. Write down moments where identity, place or action is unclear.
  3. Decide whether the fix belongs in framing, editing, captions or narration.

An example brief to adapt

Written illustration of this method; not a report of a rendered film or a customer result.

Review this storyboard as if the audio were muted. Tell me where a viewer would lose track of the parcel and why the courier changes direction. Do not invent new plot points. Suggest the smallest visual clarification for each confusion.

Review before moving on

  • Can the main action be followed?
  • Are transitions understandable?
  • Is essential audio available through reviewed captions?

Record a concrete observation beside each check: a line in the treatment, a source passage or a timestamp in the downloaded film. If you cannot inspect an item yet, leave it open. A request in a brief is an intention; the result is what must be reviewed.

What to avoid

Do not remove useful narration merely to pass a silent test. The aim is to discover avoidable ambiguity and plan access to the spoken information.
